The symbol \(\Im\) represents a function that takes in a complex number, and outputs the imaginary part of that complex number. For example, \(\Im(a + b\htmlId{tooltip-imag}{j}) = b\). It is worth noting, however, that the output is still a real number as the fact that it is multiplied by \(\htmlId{tooltip-imag}{j}\) is implied.
